Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) has woven a very tangled web in Emmerdale since agreeing to be a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah (Katie Hill)’s baby.
Soon after it was confirmed that the procedure to implant Sarah and Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant)’s embryo had worked and Charity was pregnant, we discovered something shocking. Prior to this, Charity had got extremely drunk and then done a typically reckless Charity thing after an argument with Mack (Lawrence Robb).
She had sex with Ross Barton (Mike Parr).
It was a one-off, it didn’t mean anything, she instantly regretted it. Then she realised there was a much bigger reason to regret what she’s done. What if the implant hadn’t worked and instead she’d become pregnant with Ross’s baby?

Previous Page Next PageAnd that turned out to be exactly what happened. On Ross’s insistence Charity did a paternity test and the results confirmed it was his baby. Charity then enlisted Ryan (James Moore)’s techie help to teach her how to change the test result so she could hand Ross a document that apparently proved exactly the opposite.
Then, rather than coming clean to Sarah that the baby she was carrying wasn’t hers, or to Mack that she’d cheated on him, Charity decided the best course of action was to act like nothing had happened and when the baby was born she’d hand it to Sarah and everyone would be happy and there would be absolutely no negative consequences ever.
As a plan, that’s a dreadful one with all sorts of possible pitfalls, one of them being Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) guessing that the baby was Charity’s – but assuming the father would be Mackenzie and deciding to tell him.
This led to a furious Mack taking Charity on a desperate drive to try to tell Sarah and Jacob the truth before they left for their honeymoon – leading to them being caught up in the Corriedale road crash disaster.

In upcoming episodes, Mack wants to find out once and for all whether the baby is his and gets Charity to agree to a paternity test. She says that if the baby is theirs, they’ll raise it together, something that delights Mack as raising a child of his own with Charity is what he’s always wanted.

He’s concerned about Sarah, though, and tells Ross he’s going to earn extra money for a possible second go at surrogacy for her.
This makes Ross realise that Charity was lying when she said the baby was definitely Sarah and Jacob’s – but he already knew that, as he’s got the paternity test that proves the baby is his after working out that Charity had forged the document he saw.
